MARGARET RIVER MARKETS |
SUN 12 - TUE 14.1.2014: Last night for the first time in a month we had television reception, albeit ATV and only 9, 7 and 2. We are not great television viewers, BUT whilst we struggled to see the New Year in, at 1.00am this morning we thought we had better turn the television off! Margaret River was first explored by European settlers in search of more fertile farming land, with the establishment of properties at Ellensbrook and Wallcliffe in the 1850s.The river is said to have been named 'Wooditchup' after Woodyche, the magic man of a local Aboriginal tribe. European settlers renamed the river after Margaret Wycher. The mainstays of Margaret River are agriculture, timber and tourism. First stop - the Margaret River Town Square Markets (yes a miracle, we managed to be in an area at the time of their markets).
Margaret River is very much a cross between the Hunter Valley and Morpeth with specialty shops and wineries scattered throughout the area. Off to Witchcliffe and "The Flying Wardrobe" (Second Hand/Antique Store) and the "Margaret River Candle Shop". Next stop the Woody Nook Winery at Wilyabrup. We have decided to visit the small boutiques rather than the larger ones and this ticked all the boxes.
WOODY NOOK WINERY |
It is no surprise that Debbie (married to the wine maker), our Cellar Door hostess knew where we had journeyed from - she had resided for a period of time at Mayfield West!
Stops were made at the Margaret River Chocolate Company and the Margaret River Nuts & Cereals - beautiful! Have to say the Chocolate Factory was like walking into Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
Onward to Margaret River Dairy Company - dairy equals cheese! The final stop was at the Brown Hill Estate. This was what one would call a 'Shed' rather than a Cellar Door, but having said that we enjoyed the wine tasting and of course bought a bottle!
Returned to Big Valley and a game for the puddles. Shayden 'off lead', who would have thought.
