MONDAY 13 - THURSDAY 16.4.2015: "Travel all over the countryside........"! As planned we have fast tracked our trip to Victoria, albeit it Leyland Sisters' style - s-l-o-w-l-y! To summarise our past few days:
- Spent Monday evening at Bundure Rest Area 9kms out of Jerilderie, NSW (population 1,070).
- Drove through the lovely village of Finley, NSW (population 1,921), and found the B-E-S-T E-V-E-R greengrocer (freshest and greatest range of product), IGA (carpeted, large range and reasonably priced) and Bakery (beautiful award winning Ned Kelly pies, plus bread).
- In our driving it would be fair to say that the motorhome and caravan numbers have doubled since we travelled two years ago - for some reason they all seem to be going in the opposite direction to us!
- There have been very L-O-N-G stretches of V-E-R-Y flat plains. Unfortunately not too much tree rejuvenation occurring.
- Stopped at the Numurkah Information Centre, Victoria (population 4,768), to gain directions to their Showground. "Sorry, no-one in this shire allows free camping. You can stop on the side of the road if you like". Carole climbed onto her soap box and delivered the "caravan park versus free camping debate", plus of course threw in the "poor old pensioner" argument for good measure. The best she elicited were the Caravan Park rates of $27.00 unpowered and $33.00 for powered sites. On returning to the motorhome the driver was advised that on principle we would be changing our route and driving to the free camp at McCoys Bridge which is 8kms east of Wyuna, Victoria (population 360), beside the Brisbane River.
Our final stay for this period is at the Girgarre Town Park (had to stay for 2 days as we have driven S-O far), - access to toilet and shower facilities, plus a 4 day stay option. As pleasurable as our stay is there are really not a lot of ways that we can repay the village's consideration of tourists. Purchased petrol, but the local Post Office/shop is a little scant on stock. Found out from the locals that we were able to leave a donation at the amenities so we did. In 2014 Girgarre received an award for the Best Youth Activity - not surprised when you see the scheduled list of village activities.
