FRIDAY 10 - SATURDAY 11.10.2014: The aim was to head for Texas - QLD that is! Alas, the fine specimens of physical fitness required designated rest days and only made it to Ashford. The New England rural village of Ashford lies close to the Queensland border. "Frazer's Creek" Post Office was established in 1853 and renamed Ashford in 1863. The first police station was opened in 1864 and the first school in 1868. Fred Ward the bushranger known as “Thunderbolt” rode in the area in 1867. Primary industries in the town over the years included tobacco farming and a local coal mine though each of these have ceased. Today, the surrounding areas are used for sheep and cattle farming. Local attractions include Pindari Dam on the Severn River, MacIntyre Falls, and Ashford Caves at Kwiambal National Park.
Honesty Box Caravan Park - $13.00 powered site. Free washing, showers, toilets, dump point and water available. Walked up to the Ashford Bowling Club and had tea, plus made our usual donation - not a good meal.
Hat Update - Sybil's $20.00 hat whilst the picture of elegance let too much sun in through nicely patterned holes and as a consequence, the face was somewhat red! Before leaving Inverell we visited Bunnings and purchased a $5.00 special - not attractive, but a practical fossicking, fishing and gardening hat.
