KINGSTON SE LOBSTER SCULPTURE |
Next stop Kingston SE which is located on the shores of Lacepede Bay and was named after Sir George Strickland Kingston, a South Australian politician, surveyor and architect. The Post Office was opened in 1869 and the town connected to the outside world by railway in 1876. We set up in the designated parking area opposite the beach - very nice! Toileting the dogs and a lady emerges from a shed and comes towards us. Jenny explains that a group of locals are creating a mosaic mural for the wall of the amenities block which is situated in the park opposite where we are staying - would we like to have a look. The dogs were housed inside and we wandered over to the shed. Must preface this story by pointing out that today was a 'travel day' - travel clothes, travel hair (hat and/or bed head), and most importantly, an absence of socialization!
Again, we have come across a group of dedicated volunteers passionate about the project they have undertaken for their local community - you feel their excitement. Marilyn, Heidi and Rick were working today and explained how the artwork had been designed and the complete process from beginning to end. We took photos and were about to exit when Carole advised that Sybil was interested in pursuing mosaics as a hobby, but had no experience. The group kindly allowed Sybil to add a tile piece following instruction on the process involved. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but had one known that one would be spending a considerable amount of time interacting with others one would have made some effort to improve one's appearance prior to the event!
