PORTLAND - POPULATION: 10,000

SATURDAY 9.5.2015: Rain, rain and more rain - cannot count the number of days on the trot where one exits the motorhome in sunshine and sets off on one's "walk" to the designated feature and by the time it is reached one has been caught in a deluge of rain! Undaunted we pressed on with our sightseeing - first stop Yellow Rock.
YELLOW ROCK
Continued up to the Cape Nelson Lighthouse. The lighthouse was finally lit in 1884 after the building had been delayed by difficulty in obtaining suitable bluestone for the project. Suitable stone was found at a location 11 kms away, but there was no direct road and the stone had to be carted via Portland a distance of 21kms. Some 20 hands and 25 cutters were employed at the quarry and 15 teams were engaged to cart the dressed stone to the lighthouse site. Set foot outside and we were rained on from a great height. We dripped our way into the Lighthouse Café and had a refreshment!

"I SEE LAND!"

Leylands felt that they had made every effort to "get into the spirit" of sightseeing despite the weather, so they called it a day and headed for the Portland Bowling Club. Spent a relaxing time warm and dry, plus enjoyed the club's roast. When booking our tickets for the Portland Cable Tram Ride we discovered that motorhomes "unofficially" stay at the back of the office so we spent the night there being swayed from side to side by the wind and encountering the heaviest rain to date.
