PORTLAND

SUNDAY 10.5.2015: Founded in 1996 the Portland Cable Tram Project is a culmination of over 20,000 voluntary hours of work donated by over 100 club members who have lovingly restored and built the 1886 saloon and grip cars to their former glory. We were fortunate enough to be the only passengers as we enjoyed the coastal harbor route and Portland's tourist attractions. We have found that Portland have a great deal of community support for each other and are always suggesting other attractions we should visit whilst in town. The tram depot at Henty Park houses a workshop and museum.

Lieutenant James Grant chartered the south western coastline of Victoria in 1800. Sighting the area from aboard the 'Lady Nelson', he named Portland Bay after the Duke of Portland. European settlement history for the Colony of Victoria began on the shores of Portland Bay ('Birthplace of Victoria'), with the arrival of Edward Henty in the Ladybird in 1834 from Tasmania. He was later followed by his brothers John, Stephen and Francis.
