Lieutenant James Grant chartered the south western coastline of Victoria in 1800. Sighting the area from aboard the 'Lady Nelson', he named Portland Bay after the Duke of Portland. European settlement history for the Colony of Victoria began on the shores of Portland Bay ('Birthplace of Victoria'), with the arrival of Edward Henty in the Ladybird in 1834 from Tasmania. He was later followed by his brothers John, Stephen and Francis.
