GEORGE TOWN

OLD WATCH HOUSE 1855
SATURDAY 3.3.2012: We shopped, did the laundry and visited the car wash. Day's achievement - reduced the motorhome washing time and in turn, outlay from $25.00 to $12.00 - it then rained for the next 48 hours!
George Town is Australia's oldest town, settled in 1804 two years before the now much more important city of Launceston.
PIER HOTEL - FIRST LICENSED 1850'S
Went on the George Town Heritage Trail then drove to Low Head Tourist Park. A relatively new and reasonably priced park with pristine amenities and the piece de resistance - individual dump points at every van site - pig heaven! Our purpose at Low Head - the Penguin Tours. We waited till 8.00pm and then made our way down to the beach. Do need to make mention of the driving rain, but it was all worth it - wonderful experience!
There are 18 species of penguins, all of which live in the Southern Hemisphere. The Little or Fairy Penguin (Eudyptula Minor) is the smallest species (around 33 cms high, weighing 1 kg), and the only one to breed in Australian waters. We saw the penguins "waddling" up the beach, in the process of moulting (occurs once a year and takes 15-20 days to replace the old feathers with the new ones), and in their rookeries - best of all, at times we were only 3 metres away. Breeding usually begins in September. Males begin renovating or building burrows as early as June. Females are courted and have only one partner at a time - the majority of the Little Penguins will mate for life.
