SWANSEA - POPULATION: 557

THURSDAY 8.3.2012: Whilst in St Helens we had hoped to book another fishing charter, but alas the rain kept falling! Instead, we headed off on a road trip. Through St Marys, Bicheno and onward to Swansea. Swansea is a town located in the centre of Tasmania's east coast, on the northwest shore of Great Oyster Bay, and overlooking Freycinet National Park. It was the first municipality in Australia to be established after Hobart and Sydney. The first European to explore the Swansea area was Captain John Henry Cox sailing from England to Sydney. He took his ship, the Mercury, up the eastern coast of Tasmania. In 1789 having heard of vast colonies of seals in the area, he sailed along the western shore of Maria Island and into the stretch of water he named Oyster Bay. Swansea was not settled until 1821 when George Meredith and his family arrived from Pembrokeshire, Wales.
On our arrival in Swansea we went through our accommodation options. The caravan parks do not take dogs and there are no Freedom Camps, but we did finally find "shelter" in the backyard of the Backpackers building at $10.00 per night. Swansea Council and the caravan parks are currently in court - the caravan parks aiming to have the Freedom Camps permanently closed. It is anticipated that this will be the first of many legal actions undertaken throughout Australia.
MEREDITH HOUSE
We had hoped to visit the Freycinet Peninsula, but again were unable to find accommodation that allowed dogs. Did consider selling the poodles, but at 6 years of age and with Shayden's personality we felt the response would not be great!
