LOW HEAD - POPULATION: 474

SUNDAY 4.3.2012: Low Head is a small hamlet located on a peninsula by the same name 5 km north-west of George Town, on the mouth of the Tamar River. In 1996 the MV Iron Baron ran aground on Hebe Reef, off Low Head, causing the worst oil disaster in Australia's history. The Chance Bros. 'Type G' diaphone foghorn at Low Head Lighthouse is the only operable horn of its type and is sounded at noon each Sunday.
Pilot Bay – the Low Head Pilot Station is a working complex which represents the earliest collection of surviving pilot buildings in Australia. From 1804 onwards sailing ships were the only means of communication and supply. This is the oldest pilot station to operate continuously guiding vessels safely into the river. Christ Church 1877 – services are still held every second Sunday and a wedding was held today.
BRIDPORT
Had lunch at Bridport, did a scenic through Scottsdale and headed for the Legerwood Memorial Trees. On 15th October 1918 a ceremony was held at Legerwood. 9 trees were planted to honour soldiers killed in WWI. As the names of the fallen were called out, a relative came forward to hold the tree until it was planted. In 2001 a report on the condition of the trees showed that they were no longer safe and the community were devastated that their memorials would be lost. In 2004 it was suggested that the stumps be carved into a likeness of each soldier. Eddie Freeman a chainsaw carver from Ross, was employed to sculpt the masterpieces.
