EUMUNGERIE - POPULATION: 261

DROVER'S DOG TAVERN
THURS 27 - SAT 29.04.2017: Eumungerie's major industry is agriculture, forestry and fishing. Eumungerie allows camping at their recreation centre ($10 powered/$5 unpowered), with a maximum 3 day stay. Interesting little village that has a primary school, post office and pub. Visited the Drover's Dog Tavern - again an interesting experience!
Returned to the motorhome where Junior Farmer Peel proceeded to organise a fire for O-U-R 'happy hour'. Build the fire and they will come - by the time we retreated indoors we had some six people sharing the same fire!

BROCKLEHURST - POPULATION: 474

TUES 25 - WED 26.04.2017: ANZAC DAY - "LEST WE FORGET". Exited the Red Earth Estate and headed to a park for brunch. The shops open at 1.00pm today so we will relax and then shop for our supplies. As a footnote to yesterday's zoo adventure - for those not as mechanically gifted as Carole and Sybil, one tip. When hiring an electric golf cart do not expect engine noise. Yep, received our instructions, turned the key to 'ON' and waited. Repeated the process, then finally had to call for assistance - AGAIN! FYI: 'ON/OFF' switch - no motor noise!
PEEL/TURNER PACK WERE A LITTLE TIRED
AFTER THE ZOO VISIT!
Next stop is Terramungamine Reserve (free camp), which is situated at Brocklehurst, north of Dubbo.

DUBBO

MONDAY 24.04.2017: The day has finally dawned when we are to visit Taronga Western Plains Zoo - it has been on the "gunna" list every time we have travelled, but for one reason or another (mainly a lack of funds), we have not made it. Today is the day and Sybil is EXCITED! Taronga Western Plains Zoo is home to hundreds of animals from around the world and consists of a 6km circuit that meanders through natural bushland and around large open style exhibits. We decided to complete part of the zoo on foot in the morning and then hire the golf cart for the afternoon session. Worked out well because by the afternoon the warriors were a little weary. It was a superb day! Favourite exhibits - the meerkat and hippopotamus.

DUBBO

SUNDAY 23.04.2017: Determined today a rest day and as such we made our way up to our host's cellar door for a wine tasting and cheese platter. Red Earth Estate wines are made on-site in their winery with fruit hand picked from their own vineyard. They have been operating since 2001 and the winemaker, Ken Borchardt, is happy to help you discover the wines and discuss the winemaking process.
Red Earth's mantra: "Wine, one sip of this will bathe the drooping spirits in delight beyond the bliss of dreams. Be wise and taste." John Milton (1608-1674).

DUBBO - POPULATION: 41,573

SAT 22.04.2017: As per usual with market days, we were up way too early for O-U-R body clocks. Not sure why historically markets must commence at the crack of dawn, but they do! One would have to say that Wellington Markets do not exactly "bust a boiler" when it comes to setting up - everything is v-e-r-y casual, even the sales were casual! As FIFOs we were allocated the very end of the stalls - many of the customers were not even prepared to travel those extra few feet to see what we offered. To say we had a poor sales day would probably be an understatement - paid $10 for the site, $10 for two cups of coffee and $16 for a locally produced bottle of wine. When we did the calculations we were $7 in the red! The main sales were to other vendors who we believe decided to make sympathy purchases.
RELAXING WAY TO FINISH THE DAY!
Carole had rung ahead to a Dubbo MSO for accommodation and had been told that they did not take dogs. There had been an incident with their dogs and people staying at the MSO. The MSO kindly suggested we ring "Red Earth Wines". Rang and yes we could stay 3 nights, $15 a night if electricity was required, nothing for free camping. Oh and you can do wine tasting and have a food platter if you like - gee, have to see if we can manage that one! Sitting having our evening refreshment and another traveller with dog in tow came up to socialise. Immediately took Shayden away from the situation and continued on! Carole "seized the moment" and by the end of the conversation had sold a dog's jumper to the visitor. We were now $5 in the black, albeit that the lady has only left a $2 deposit on the jumper! Rang Dr Debra and she advised that all the readings bar the thyroid (mildly above), were good for Madison - liver reading was 40 which is superb!

WELLINGTON - POPULATION: 4,540

FRIDAY 21.04.2017: Both Nav and Driver are somewhat FATIGUED after yesterday's drive so we made it as far as Gulgong and the Centennial Hotel (EST. c. 1872). Had a lovely counter lunch in the beer garden and planned the next stage of the drive. We are headed for Wellington to try our hand at their local markets. Drove to Wellington checked out the market venue for the morning, then settled in for the night at the free camp 7kms out of town.

MERRIWA - POPULATION: 1,790

MERRIWA FREE CAMP
THURS 20.04.2017: We said our goodbyes and headed for what has now become a traditional part of any trip - the vet! This time it is Madison with bouts of vomiting and blood in the diarrhoea on and off since Monday. We have dosed her with the appropriate medicine, but still no success. Greencross Tamworth, yes we also have shares in this veterinary practice! Went in to see Dr Debra Braithwaite at 11.30am and exited at 1.30pm - yes she was thorough. Madison had stool and blood tests, physical examinations, the works. If we lived in the area we would definitely have Dr Debra as our vet. Determined it was a gastrointestinal problem, with the cause unknown. We were to ring the clinic tomorrow to find out the blood test results and if need be follow up with medication once we arrived in Dubbo. Topped up on supplies and hit the road by 2.30pm, headed for Cassilis. We thought we would again give "Dolly" the opportunity to redeem herself and so plotted our course. Off we drive into the "Never Never", then we hit a dirt road - okay we can do this, slowly! 20kms of slow, agonising driving and then we come across a sign "WATER ON THE ROAD"! We hesitantly approached and unfortunately assessed that we were not brave enough to tackle the cross over - we threw "Dolly" into the water before doing our U turn! We were only 3kms from our turn off to Cassilis! We drove A-L-L the way back and had to go via Scone to reach our destination. Night had fallen and by now the usually short distance travellers had more than enough! By 7.30pm we decided to call it quits at Merriwa and found a free camp behind the Information Centre - yep, just O-N-E of those days!

NUNDLE

DOWNTOWN NUNDLE!
MON 17 - WED 19.04.2017: Nundle has returned to normal! Our days have consisted of rest, relaxation, domestics and spending time with Kim, Ruth, Ebony, Heath and Dell. As always the time has flown and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

NUNDLE

SUNDAY 16.04.2017: There are some days you wake up and the way you envisage the day taking shape never quite comes to fruition! Woke to find the police outside Kim and Heath's front door - established that sadly a young man and his family had been camping at another venue and in the early hours of the morning he had suffered a heart attack. With no phone reception the family had driven him to this caravan park in the hope of assistance, but unfortunately he had passed away. Needless to say, the entire community of Nundle was shaken. Kim and Heath were otherwise involved for the day so we put our hand up to assist at the festival. Information Centre - okay we can do that! Spent some time handing out pamphlets and "nagging" people for a gold coin donation, then the rest of the time in the Information booth. Still had plenty of time to take in the festival activities.
Kim and Heath had kindly invited us out to the Nundle Sport and Recreation Club for tea, with their family and a group of employees. Feeling a little jaded we thought it would be lovely to have the evening meal prepared for us. We sat down, ordered our first drink and with that everyone bar Ruth and Dell cleared out!
The story was - a local left the pub and hit the nearest tree, car was literally torn in half, but he walked away uninjured. Another group from the pub jumped in a car in pursuit of him! Our dinner party left on foot to alert people at the pub, but the group in the car had exited the vehicle and had proceeded on foot physically threatening them. Meanwhile the female driver of the car was playing dodgem with any bystanders.

Our dinner party group retreated to the nearest house for protection and Kim made it back to the club to inform us that we were now in 'lock down' till the police arrived. Carole and Sybil responded in their usual manner, we'll have a bottle of wine please, looks like a long night! Kindly, the Club staff had prepared takeaway meals before the kitchen officially closed. The lock down was called at 10.30pm and we were all allowed to return home - what can one say, a little surreal, but a great evening nonetheless!

NUNDLE

NUNDLE TRANSFORMED!
SATURDAY 15.04.2017: Sun was shining, birds were singing and grass was growing as we set off for the 2017 Nundle Go For Gold Festival. The main entertainment is provided by the Australian Yau Kung Mun Association and the Traditional Chinese Dancers. Did we mention the market stalls - lots of stalls and as per usual there were purchases to be made! We again viewed the excellent Chinese Lions Light Display and again do not have any decent photographs!
