WED 6.11.2013: Left Kalbarri and headed for Coronation Beach - on the way we made a few stops.
Collided with our first snake today - sunning itself in the middle of the road. Carole spent the next few hours checking the interior ensuring that the snake had not hitched a ride!
Port Gregory is bordered by the beautiful Hutt Lagoon, known as the Pink Lake due to its colour created by the natural occurring beta carotene. Have to say the photographs are not as pink as the lagoon actually is - rather surreal.
Came across the Lynton Heritage Site - a Convict Hiring Depot - Port Gregory 1853-1856. Although established as a free colony WA's continuing shortage of labour led to the introduction of convicts in 1850. Pastoral expansion into the Victoria District from the late 1840's and the Geraldine Mine establishment in 1849 created a need for labour in the region. At first convicts, officers and stores were housed under canvas. Building the permanent structures was slow, with all only being completed shortly before closure. Remnants of the hospital, lime kiln and Commissariat Building were also on site.
Called into Northampton - one of the oldest settlements in WA outside of Perth. It was declared a town site in 1864 and classified as a historic town by the National Trust of Australia in 1993. Unfortunately not a great deal of the heritage buildings have been maintained in their original style. We finally headed for Coronation Beach and yet again - some rest and relaxation!
