SHARK BAY WORLD HERITAGE AREA

FRI 1 - SAT 2.11.2013: Visited Little Lagoon - almost perfectly circular in shape this turquoise coloured lagoon is a natural nursery for several fish species. Spent two days fishing from the Denham jetty - many fish were caught, but only two of size. Sybil decided to practice her lure fishing and using the newly acquired lure, hooked a "big one". Unsure of the 'brand' it was dragged in so that two locals could view it. Both recoiled in horror - "it's a Northwest Blowfish"! Carole also took a step back leaving Sybil with the catch - one of these fish had been in the water at Monkey Mia and we were advised to move to shore. Not only are they poisonous, but a lady had caught one in the area and the fish had bitten her finger off. It was a moment of firsts - the locals advised that it was rare to catch these fish on a lure (lucky us), and it was the first fish Sybil had caught on a lure - even luckier! The blowfish and the shiny new lure still secured safely in its' mouth swam off to deeper waters!
BLUESPOT TUSKFISH

Carole was far more successful in landing a Bluespot Tuskfish.

The Church and Restaurant in Denham are both constructed from compacted shell blocks from the Shell Block Quarry at Hamelin Pool.

  1. To whom it may concern, Hey there, my name is Aleisha, I work for the Shire of Shark Bay. At the moment a project has been conducted at the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre to create activity posters for our newly installed window displays. Lately we've been collecting our best photo images of tourists enjoying the bay. Unfortunately we only have a small collection of photos that we can consider great to be displayed. In an effort to find more photos I hit the web, knowing that there would surely be some tourists that have documented their stay in the area, and in effect, taken some great photos. I came across your blog and really likened to the photo of your partner fishing of the Denham Jetty. I'm wondering if you would consider allowing us to place your photo in one of our frames to promote fishing and squidding in Shark Bay. (I can't guarantee that the photo will be used) If you could please respond at your earliest convenience. You can reach me via my email - record@sharkbay.wa.gov.au. If you decide against it, we would more than understand. Regards, Aleisha.
