SHARK BAY WORLD HERITAGE AREA

THURS 31.10.2013: MONKEY MIA: Famous for the visiting wild dolphins and beachfront location, Monkey Mia is located 28kms from Denham. As there are only a handful of people selected to feed the dolphins, a great deal of planning had taken place on how to best be the "chosen one". Solution - dress Carole from head to knee in "fire engine" red - red shorts, red, white and blue shirt! Dolphin feeding required arrival at 7.30am (yes, we made it), orientation 7.45am and the dolphins would stroll in some time from 8.00am - 12.00pm. We made our way down to the water as instructed and listened to the dolphin history.

The time came - Carole was pushed to the front, but unfortunately rose her arm in a "pick me, pick me" action which the staff duly admonished her for. We ventured down for the second feeding and again Carole was propelled to the fore. Dutifully listened to the history (by now we could advise on any information overlooked in the presentation), and Carole with hands clasped and toes out of the water was F-I-R-S-T PICK! Sybil just about fell face first into the water in an effort to gain the perfect photo opportunity and through excitement only just caught both Carole and Nicky (the dolphin Carole fed), in frame! Nicky (born 29.12.75), is the daughter of Holeyfin, who was one of the first dolphins to visit the beach and accept fish from humans in the 1970's. Nicky is now the oldest of the current beach-visiting dolphins.
NICKY & CAROLE

CAROLE - MILDY EXCITED!

It was all over in a matter of seconds, but the entire experience was excellent. Having the dolphins swim in so close and definitely "play up" to the onlookers was superb. Had a celebratory breakfast at the Monkey Mia Resort and then headed back to Denham.
