DALY WATERS - POPULATION: ABOUT 23

MONDAY 29.07.2013: Having forced his way through lancewood scrub and harsh terrain at the rate of just over one kilometre a day on 28th May 1862 John McDouall Stuart's party entered the "Fourth Chain of Ponds" and named the area "Daly Waters" after the Governor of South Australia Sir Dominic Daly. Daly Waters has Australia's first international airport - it was a stopover for the 1926 London to Sydney Air Race. Later it was used for a refuelling stop by QANTAS  and as an air force base during WWII. Another heritage feature is the Daly Waters Historic Pub built in the 1930's. It is one of the territory's oldest buildings and was originally a supply point for drovers. We stayed at the Daly Waters Pub Caravan Park and enjoyed the evening's entertainment - great atmosphere. Everything was paid for at the pub - petrol, caravan site and most importantly the infamous "Beef & Barra" evening meal, which was accompanied with a smorgasbord of salads - n-i-c-e!
